Foundation for the Blind: Puppy Raisers
Have you ever wondered how a dog becomes a service dog? This is a process organizations like Foundation for the Blind address with their programs. One such program is called Raise a Puppy. A Puppy Raiser Volunteer, once screened by the Foundation for the Blind, takes home a puppy (7 -14 weeks old) and through the course of 12-14 months gives the puppy socialization skills, good house manners and all the love and attention it needs. After this period of puppyhood, the young dog returns to the Foundation for the Blind and begins his or her life long career as an assistant for a disabled person.
