Italian Greyhound

The Italian Greyhound is an aristocratic breed, originating in Europe and mainly owned by royalty. They are depicted in many of Renaissance era paintings. These dogs have become great companions in modern times.

Known as "Velcro dogs" for their attachment to whoever owns them, the Italian Greyhound is suited to a single owner or someone with no children. The Italian Greyhound is smaller in size compared to a Greyhound and prefers to be in your lap as often as possible! They also prefer a quiet household and are rather high strung. Socialization should begin early with people and other animals.

They are fast runners and will need to be kept on a leash. These dogs have a great health rating but can break bones easily until about 18 months of age. Grooming is minimal.

Lakeland Terrier

The Lakeland Terrier is an all around great dog for urban or rural environments, perfect for a family with plenty of active time with the dog.

His coat has a distinctive "saddle" marking across the back and shoulder and a well shaped "beard" due to long facial hair. The Lakeland Terrier will need grooming to remove hair around the eye and face area. Otherwise, the Lakeland Terrier's coat is easy to maintain.

Once a vermin hunting dog, this breed is now seen in shows or as the family pet. Be aware that your Lakeland Terrier will want to dig based on its natural instincts.

This dog is easy going and friendly and makes a fine companion.

Neapolitan Mastiff

Just how big are Neapolitan Mastiffs?

Neapolitan Mastiffs can weigh over 150 lbs. and are known for their massive size and loose folds of skin. Bred to be protective and guard, Neapolitan Mastiffs are not recommended for first time dog owners due to their size and strength. The Neapolitan Mastiff is very strong and protective around strangers.

The coat needs little maintenance and is virtually shed free however; these dogs do more than their share of drooling! We have come up with a solution that every large or giant breed dog owner will appreciate, a waterproof dog bed. Easy to clean and care for, drool, dander, dog smells and hair are a thing of the pastwww.dogcheapsleeps.com

Moving with Your Dog.

Moving is stressful, this is true for your best friend as well. Dogs are sensitive and need some extra considerations when moving. If they are being driven or flown to the new home, they'll need a sturdy crate that is the right size and frequent stops to stretch and go to the bathroom. Dogs may become nervous if they aren't used to riding in a car. Taking a few short pre-trips with your dog will help ease the newness of this experience.

Consult your veterinarian to see if supplements or a prescription medicine can help relive a highly anxious dog. Make sure your dog is in good health before the move.

Once at the new residence allow you dog plenty of time to sniff and get used to the place. The adjustment time will be shortened by taking these few steps. We've listed a couple of resource links below for further information.

My Dog Eats Weird Stuff

While the official term for eating weird stuff is pica, the word does not capture the bizarre and peculiar collection of items that dogs have been known to eat. Here is a list gathered in 2010 by the Veterinary  Pet Insurance Company We’ve gather a couple of resource links for you to explore if you are having this issue with you dog.  There are about as many causes for pica as there are dogs, always check with your vet upon discovery of your dog eating inedible things.
The two suggestions to prevent dogs eating inedible objects are environment and supervision. Check your dog’s environment and remove anything he has a tendency to eat. Also, supervise your dog. Don’t give the dog an opportunity to get into trouble with inedible objects.

Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiffs is an impressive dog,  large in stature with a solemn watchful look. This breed is a guardian and highly independent. The Tibetan Mastiffs originated in 1100 BC China high in the Himalayan Mountains . Tibetan Mastiffs were used mainly to protect property and family of the migrant farmers. This breed is still considered a primitive breed with slow maturation and females having only one estrus  per year. It was in the early 1900’s that Tibetan Mastiffs became recognized by the Kennel  Club.
Very independent and intelligent, Tibetan Mastiffs history of working closely with humans have given them an uncanny human understanding.
Tibetan Mastiffs have the following unique traits:
1. Females have a single estrus
2. Tibetan Mastiffs are not always willing to please their owners.
3. Tibetan Mastiffs can be extremely determined to get their own way.
4. Tibetan Mastiffs are very cat-like in their behavior.
5. Before buying a Tibetan Mastiff, you should consider that a Tibetan Mastiff needs a large fenced yard, may be very vocal at night, requires socialization with other animals and people, and may act very stubbornly. (reference: http://www.tibetanmastiff.org/is-tm-right-for-you.html)

Why do dogs sniff other dogs butts?

Socially dogs may have strange behaviors compared to humans but for dogs, these behaviors make perfect sense! Thirty three percent of a dog’s brain is designed to process smells. Dogs have a keen sense of smell and are useful to human for sniffing out everything from smuggled drugs to diseases. Human being only use 5 percent of the brain to process smells by comparison.

When a dog sniffs the rear end of another dog, his sense of smell meets the other dog’s anal glands, which produce strong smells and give clues about all sorts of things to other dogs. Besides, they can't shake hands! Smelling each other is a socially accepted practice among dogs. Sniffing is calming, even for dogs who already know each other they will sniff each other every time they meet.

Here are a couple more links for more in-depth information on this fascinating subject!

What can I do about my dog's fear of loud noises and thunderstorms?

The fact is most dogs have a fear of something. Many fear loud noises regardless of if they have trauma related to noise or not. It’s always a good idea to try to lessen the fears of your dog or they will most likely get worse.

The two most common responses dogs have to the anxiety caused by fear of noise are to run away or some form of destructive behavior (chewing, digging, etc).  These behaviors can be modified by introducing a mild form of the noise and giving your dog a really special treat when he becomes afraid. The treat will act to counter the fear and soon your dog will expect to receive the special treat when he hears a storm approaching. This is due to a basic psychological effect known as operant conditioning. You can try this on your own or seek out a professional animal trainer/behaviorist.

We’ve provided some links below to more resources on this subject. As always, if your dog displays extreme behaviors please consult a veterinarian.

Scottish Deerhound

The Scottish Deerhound resembles a larger thicker coated Greyhound. He got his name centuries ago by being the best at pursuit and killing of deer in Scottland. There were exclusive ownership rules in place and no one lower than an earl could own a Scottish Deerhound. This lead to breed extinction in the early 1800s.

Weighing between 75-100 pounds, this dog can be intimidating to small children. The Scottish Deerhound may also chase furry animals and will need to be fenced in order to prevent him running off. His coat is easy to care for and he requires only brushing and bathing.

Why do dogs bury bones?

Dogs bury bones for a variety of reasons. Instinct is probably the main reason dogs bury bones and other food. Dogs of the past had to hunt for food and often buried leftover for future meals. If your dog is burying his food or bones/treats, he is probably telling you he has more than enough to eat.
Sometimes only the bones were leftover. Dogs would keep them, buried, nearby incase the hunting became sparse. They would dig up the bones and extract the nutrient rich marrow.

Fast forward to today’s dog, his instincts tell him to bury his excess food and bones.  This is a game for today’s dog and will provide endless hours of fun and play for you dog. Give him some soft dirt and a few toys or bones and he will do the rest!

Schnoodle

A Hybrid of the Poodle and the Schnauzer Schnoodle dogs are loving and loyal and make a great family pet. They do well indoors with other pets and children. They can be protective but are generally not "yappy". Schnoodle dogs need moderate amounts of exercise. Weekly grooming is necessary, combing and a professional trim every 6 weeks or so. They do not shed, making them ideal for allergy sufferers. These dogs make good therapy dogs and over all best companion dogs.

German Spitz

The German Spitz dog comes in Standard, Medium and Large size in many different coat colors. This rare pure breed dog makes an excellent watch dog. They are alert, curious and always busy. It will be necessary to teach this dog when not to bark! These dogs will need daily grooming due to a coat that mats easily. German Spitz need moderate exercise daily and would be suited to apartment life as the companion to an elderly person. A nervous dog, the German Spitz can be snappy towards children. It's best to give obedience training early and establish yourself as leader of the pack with this dog.

Whelping Pad

As a large dog breeder, we know that whelping can be stressful and a lot of work.  For a while we purchased prepackaged corrugated cardboard for the bottom of the whelping box.  We spent well over $2,000.00 for those cardboard whelping pads during the first litter.
There had to be a better way. It doesn't happen often, but I had an idea. Why not make waterproof whelping pads too?  We put together a prototype using the 4" foam and a waterproof cover, oops, the pig rails are mounted 4" above the bottom of the whelping box.  We had eliminated the puppy safety zone.
We decided to use 1" foam and opted for the high density foam for the whelping pads, it had to be solid but still soft enough to be warm and comfortable.  The 1" foam was the ticket.
After having a litter raised on the whelping pad, we discovered stuff leaked through to the floor below.  To counter that we started making the whelping pads 1/8" larger than the dimensions of the whelping box.  It had to fit snuggly.  It did, and problem solved.
The whelping pad can be mopped in place in the whelping box (remove the puppies first).  There is no reason to remove the pad, we mop them with a bleach / water solution, it gets cleaned and disinfected at the same time.
These whelping pads are a dream come true for breeders. Send us your whelping box dimensions, we'll provide you with a quote and a custom made whelping pad.

All the right ingredients...the best dog beds!

The Foam
We use a good quality foam, not upholstery foam, we use solid sheets of 4" medium density foam, cut to size.  It holds up to all kinds of abuse, we've had some of our dog beds now for seven years, they have been through three litters of puppies. We're asked how long does the foam will last before it starts to break down. We don't know.

The Vinyl
We use Marine Grade vinyl, one of the best vinyls made, it's soft, pliable and very durable.  Our Great Danes have been our test proving grounds for our prototypes.  If the vinyl can hold up to two 160 pound Great Danes, you know it's durable. We take our dog beds to dog shows with us, we use them in the bottom of crates and x-pens, if the show is outside the beds can go on wet grass, grass stains wipe right off.
If you travel with your dog (who doesn't?) your dog can have his own bed in the hotel room, leaving the real bed for the humans (don't count on it though). The opening of the dog bed cover is closed with Velcro, proven to be waterproof as well.  The Velcro is sewn back into the opening so no curious noses can get to it.

In Summary
We take great pride in our products, we have faith in them, we know they work and we know that last for a long, long time.  It may just be the last dog bed you ever buy. We do sell the covers separately if your dog already has a favorite dog bed. All we need are the dimensions, length, width and thickness, of your dog's bed. We do now sell patch kits for the vinyl covers, we send the kits with instructions.  Any vinyl scraps left from making a dog bed or cover are sent with your order, hang onto them, it insures you have the matching vinyl to make a patch if something happens to the cover.
We do recommend supervision at first if you have a voracious chewer, however, we have sold dog beds to owners who tell us their dog has chewed through every dog bed purchased for them.  We later get an email saying the dog has not chewed his new waterproof bed. We don't know why, we speculate it's because there are no odors associated with these beds, dog bed odor is now a thing of the past.
Dog dander and hair can be wiped right off these pads and beds. If the dog bed gets too messy we take it outside and hose it off, they look as good as new.
Every dog bed or pad is custom sewn right here in our shop, we have one of the best seamstresses ever created who does the honors.

There are no added shipping charges for dog beds or whelping pads sold within the United States.

Large Breed Dogs

We at dog cheap sleeps love all dogs, big, small, drooling, leaning, even shedding dogs.

But specifically we breed and show Great Dane Dogs.  We understand the high costs of large dog beds and the angst of having to throw them away when they start smelling. The cover gets wet, the filling gets wet, then the  aroma of wet dog permeates your space.

Some of the large dog bed covers can be washed, however, a lot of the bed filling cannot, some being small pieces of foam, fluffy fiber fill and sometimes saw dust.

After another purchase of three huge x large dog beds I thought, I'll just go on the internet and find some waterproof dog bed covers for them...............

Nothing.

So, we started making our own, and the life of dogcheapsleeps, com waterproof dog beds begins.

Solve your big expensive dog problems with our simple easy to clean BIG solution, send your custom dimensions (height and width) to dogcheapsleeps@gmail.com or follow through to our website and buy your large dog bed now!

Kuvasz

(KOO-vahz) The Kuvasz is a fearless, bold flock guardian. Their coat can be anywhere from wavy to straight and the undercoat is thick. The Kuvasz is intelligent and can be a good family dog if it has an owners who know how to display a natural, firm authority over it, is socialized, trained thoroughly, and raised with children from the start, but it is not recommended for most families. If the dog is going to live with children, it is best, if possible, to select a Kuvasz pup and have the dog raised with the children. While the Kuvasz bonds well with children in the family, other children need to be monitored. You do not want the Kuvasz to believe he needs to protect your child from another should the children get into a scuffle. It is recommended to not leave them unsupervised. While puppies will easily accept new humans and animals, as the dog grows this will change (You can’t teach old dogs new trick, sort of speak).

Parvo in Puppies (Gastrointestinal)

Levi is a six month old, show prospect, Great Dane puppy. On Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 he was stricken with parvo.
It is Monday, April 29th, 2013 12:50am, Levi is well, I mean he is up, eating, running, I am scratching my head. Less than a week for parvo recovery, huh? I don’t understand it, this never happens, I guess it’s kind of a miracle, I am so relieved, so happy and so grateful.
He’s eating dry dog food right now; he wants nothing to do with cottage cheese or yogurt. He may get sick to his stomach later, but right now, he can eat all he can fit into his tiny self.
I was hunkered down for three to four weeks of treatment, not a recovery on the Monday after being stricken. I wonder how many other parvo puppies are out there suffering under, and because of, veterinarian care? And veterinarian medications?
Had I not (accidentally) skipped one of Levi’s shots, I would have never known. May be it wasn’t an accident, may be the dog Gods said “enough”. If so, thank you God.

Our God and the dog’s God are the same one, in case anyone was wondering.
I did some research on Unasyn yesterday (the antibiotic shots I’m giving Levi), I discovered it’s ampicillin, or penicillin. Human side effects are nausea, diarrhea, and lethargy. I could find nothing on treating dogs with Unasyn. Pennicillin, yes, some dogs show symptoms of lethargy, nausea and diarrhea, really? Same symptoms as parvo.
Levi did not get a shot last night, what a difference 8 hours makes; he’s a new puppy this morning.
Happy dance.
This is my second run-in with parvo, both times the vets have been wrong. The first vet was arrogant and refused to listen. I never went back to that vet again. I’ll see how this current vet reacts to this information, if he gives me the typical veterinarian responses, he’ll be replaced too. There’s no such thing as a good veterinarian who doesn’t listen.
Understand, this has been my experience with parvo and medication. Last Friday I put Levi on Parvaid and Esbilac, as of yesterday he was off all veterinarian medications, today he is cured. These results may not be the same for everyone; your veterinarian will probably not listen, so proceed with caution. If you are not seeing an improvement after making adjustments, go back to the recommended veterinarian’s medications.
As always, be kind to and love your puppy, its nature’s best cure.

Below are links to Parvaid, Edbilac and Wolf Creek Ranch. Wolf Creek Ranch is, hands down, the best website for helping and healing a puppy stricken with parvo.

Great Pyrenees

The Great Pyrenees is a capable and imposing guardian, devoted to its family and somewhat wary of strangers — human or canine. When not provoked, it is calm, well-mannered and somewhat serious. It is very gentle with its family and children. It has an independent, somewhat stubborn, nature and may try to dominate a less secure owner. Some are not good off leash and may wander away. The Great Pyrenees tends to bark a lot. These dogs are not recommended for apartment life and would do best with a mid-to-large sized yard. They need space, but adapt well to family life.

Bringing Home a New Puppy!

Bringing home a new puppy can be quite the experience for both the dog and your family. To make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, here are 3 easy tips that will help you introduce your new addition to your family.

Make sure that, if you have other pets (another dog or a cat), to introduce them slowly. They will have some natural curiosity toward each other but you have to make sure that the greeting process between them is slow.

Make sure that the new addition has a safe place it can be. For the first few weeks of having the new addition, if you have another pet, have the dog stay in a room where another family member lives. Obviously, make sure the pet has everything it needs: water and food.

And most of all make sure there is a dog bed somewhere in the house, preferably in an area with low foot traffic. This is a space where your puppy can rest and feel safe. Your puppy's bed is one of the most important first purchases you'll make!

We have lowered the price on our small puppy sized dog beds!

Akita

(a-KEE-ta ) Considered a first-class guard dog in Japan, Japanese mothers would often leave their children in the family Akita's care. The Akita is bold, independent, stubborn and tenacious. Demonstrative to his family, he is utterly devoted and will protect family members. Though not the breed for everyone, in the right hands, the Akita is an excellent companion. He needs the chance to run in a safe area or on leash for a long jog. Given ample exercise and training, he can be a quiet and well-mannered house dog. The Akita is happiest if he can spend most of his time with his family. They are easy to train, however taking them to obedience classes is recommended as they are cautious around strangers. It vocalizes with many interesting sounds, but it is not an excessive barker

Top 5 Things Your Dog Needs From You

The needs of individual breeds vary widely; of course, large dogs will have vastly different daily needs than small dogs.  This blog post will focus on the universal needs of every dog rather than those specific to any one breed.
5. His own toys and space. Your dog needs to know what is his and where his safe place to retreat is located. Providing toys and telling him they are his early on in life will provide you many years with fewer chewed shoes. Having an easy to clean dog bed, such as a Dog Cheap Sleeps.com dog bed will not only provide your best friend with a comfortable resting place, it is easy to clean and can be traveled with.
4. The right diet, health and dental care. As always consult your vet for the proper diet and health care for your particular dog. It’s also important to take care of your dog’s dental needs.
3. Exercise. Check with a guide like the one at pets.webmd.com for recommendations of how much and what type of exercise your dog will need. This goes a long way to keeping your best friend happy!
2. Rewards and praise. Dogs are people pleasers, they seek the tone of your voice and when you’re heaping on the praise they are at their very best. Don’t skimp on daily praises for good behavior!
1. Lots of love and attention. Your dog needs your attention; he will get it one way or another. Show your dog you love him by paying attention to his needs. A little love goes a long way with a dog; the returns are a lifetime of happiness for your pet who will love you back unconditionally.

3 Ways To Keep Your Dog and Your Home Smelling Great!

1.       Your dog’s oral health needs tending to frequently. Providing the right diet and some toys that aid in cleaning the canine teeth goes a long way. After only 4 years, a dog can begin to show signs of periodontal disease without the right dental care. The first sign of this is often really bad DOG BREATH!

2.       Your dog’s grooming schedule should be a priority for a sweet smelling dog – refer to guidelines specific for the breed of dog you have to provide the frequency and type of grooming necessary. Overall, removing loose hair and dander as well as shampooing and deodorizing your best friend regularly will go a long way to keeping not only your dog but also your home smelling great!

3.       Your dog’s bedding will influence the smell of both your dog and your house. A dog bed that captures and traps in hair, dander and odor is one more thing you will have to clean and disinfect on a regular basis. Some of the cloth dog beds cannot be cleaned or washed well enough to remove the hair and dander. The makers of Dog Cheap Sleeps’ dog beds have come up with a solution to the old stinky dog bed dilemma – a waterproof, marine grade vinyl, dog bed with 4 inches of foam padding that is secured with a unique Velcro enclosure. Your Dog Cheap Sleeps dog bed can simply be washed off with a damp sponge or for larger messes – taken outside and hosed off.

Bearded Collie

Unlike other Collies the Bearded Collie has long facial hair. This breed is very outgoing and affectionate however will need a lot of attention in the grooming department! Bearded collies make wonderful family pets with size ranging from 20-22 inches tall they were originally bred for companionship and service to man.
It is believed Bearded Collies originated in Central Europe. They are part of the category of dogs known for herding. Bearded collies weren’t introduced to the United States until the 1950s. For more information please follow our resource link below…

Puppies!

Puppies......
An Addiction.......

Every time we have a litter of puppies I say 'never again'. Within a couple years we cave in and have another litter of puppies. I have no idea why, it makes no sense, it defies logic.

We breeders tinker with genetics, we try to improve our breed, eliminate genetically inherited diseases, hope for the perfect example of the breed, then try, try again. There is something wrong with us.

The first couple weeks you marvel at the miracle of new born puppies, weeks two through six, you see all things as new through their eyes. The first guests, the first kitty cat, the first trip outdoors, real dog food, the first bark, whine, all firsts, fun and exciting. At seven weeks, something changes, those sweet faces that had looked at you so adoringly are gone. There something going on, something, dare we say? Demonic?

Those puppies who hung on your every word, who followed you a little too closely everywhere you went, their sun rose and set on you and only you. Suddenly, you have become boring, old news, the one who blocks their fun, who says 'get out of the garbage' way too often, who barks 'no' at every perceived offense. You have become the enemy of puppy. Hunker down, this is a long phase.

The kindly friend and helper who was there every step of the way, that lady who spoiled the puppies no matter the offense, who you smiled at as she entertained and pampered those puppies, the lady you now squint at and suspect, a conspiracy that may have started higher up on the food chain. Could she be the leader of this new nefarious puppy gang?

At ages two weeks through six weeks you ponder the logistics of adding multiple dogs to your family, what's a few more to feed, to clean up after, to take to the vet, to trip over, to share your food with, to control your every waking moment.

That changes, you start thinking of new homes, new puppy families, longing once again for some days of peace and quiet. The day when the mop no longer lives within reach, garbage cans can once again be returned to the floor level, you can travel freely without fear of tripping over the little darlings. You swear you'll never have another litter of puppies.

Then they're gone, off to new homes, your wish has come true, peace and quiet again reigns supreme. Dog food remains in the food dish, water is no longer dripped throughout the floors as it is consumed. Within one year, two years, you once again ponder a new litter of puppies. Those torturous weeks between seven and twelve weeks forgotten, a vague memory, remembered with fondness, it's a conspiracy, a devious plan by the dog Gods, an addiction that cannot be overcome.

The cycle continues. Insanity is alive and well. Puppy breath will be back, the mop will once again be ever present, you will hate yourself every time you scream 'no'.

At seven weeks you swear off ever having another litter of puppies....................

It's just the way it works.
